Questioning Art

Description

This work was one of my personal projects, a first attempt at mixed media. Using art-related newspaper articles, watercolor paper, and watercolor medium along with three different layers of matted paper, I wanted to address the controversial topic of whether anime could be considered a form of art. Anime is often argued to not be an art form hence the words, but when asked the simple question of what art is, it leads to even more confusing thoughts. Today, art can basically be anything depending on the individual and what that individual's beliefs are on art.

oh no, of course anime is art. it is really quite silly of anyone to say otherwise. its a style; a sub-category to cartooning. granted, not all "works of art" have meaning... which is truly what makes it or does not make it art. it's primarily about the intention of the piece, and style/ quality/ art principles and elements are secondary. Although to be a -strong- piece, it requires unity, and many obvious art principles/elements. This is how I can see people considering anime to not be art- or at least anything not professional. Little kids that draw anime usually copy or trace anime imagery; that is not really art, but is a part if the learning curve.

Art is a form of expression. As long as the artist is expressing -something- in the piece, it is art.
